2022 Division Scholarly Program: Call for Submissions

The Public and Nonprofit (PNP) Division of the Academy of Management brings public and nonprofit scholars together to elevate the quality and substance of research on public and nonprofit organizations, sectors, institutions, and personnel. The broader Academy setting in which our meetings take place provides a unique opportunity to examine public and nonprofit scholarship in a rich interdisciplinary management context. The full paper and peer review submission process, professional development workshops, doctoral consortium, and expanded catalogue of offerings provide enhanced opportunities for scholars to interact, making the Public and Nonprofit Division meetings among the premier academic conferences in our field.

This year’s All-Academy Theme is “Creating a Better World Together.” As this year’s AOM Program Chair, Dr. Sharon A. Alvarez, observes: “The events that have shaken the world make it clear that if it affects one of us, it affects all of us … As the world emerges from the dark days of the recent past and a new normal takes place, collaboration and cooperation between … organizations, managers, and stakeholders will be of utmost importance.” This theme has particular relevance for public and nonprofit scholars and practitioners, whose work has always been focused on hope for a better world. The timeliness of this theme even more deeply resonates at a time when public and nonprofit organizations have been at the front lines of global responses to the Covid-19 pandemic and social and political unrest. We encourage you to consider this Academy theme as you prepare proposals (more info available at

In addition to theme-related proposals, all topics relevant to the PNP Division’s core mission are also welcome. Our members study a variety of important topics including, but not limited to, bureaucratic politics and decision making, cross-sector collaboration and networks, design and delivery of public services, diversity and inclusion in the workplace, government procurement, human capital management, innovation and organizational change, leadership, management of humanitarian and international organizations, motivation and performance of employees, strategic planning and management, social entrepreneurship, and transparency and accountability of public and nonprofit organizations.

The PNP Division encourages and welcomes diverse research methods and approaches including the use of ethnographic studies, laboratory and field experiments, survey research, simulation and systems dynamics modeling, and textual/natural language processing.

One Annual Meeting, Three Experiences

The Academy’s new hybrid meeting model allows attendees to participate on-site in-person in Seattle as well as virtually. Virtual participation will allow for three types of experiences that, when combined, will offer true global participation:

  • Synchronous virtual only ("webinar" and "meeting" style) sessions
  • Asynchronous (on-demand) virtual only sessions
  • Live-streamed on-site sessions represent our "hybrid" offerings

Some sessions are to be scheduled for the day before and the day following the on-site meeting, but most synchronous (live) and all hybrid scholarly sessions will be scheduled to occur during the on-site meeting days.

Instructions for Submission

Complete papers and proposals for panels and symposia must be submitted by Tuesday, 11 January 2022 at 5:00 PM ET (NY time). Only electronic submissions through the AOM Submission Center will be accepted. PNP Division Awards

Conference submissions are eligible for the following PNP Awards:

  • Best Doctoral Student Conference Paper Award
  • Carlo Masini Award for Innovative Scholarship in Public and/or Nonprofit Management
  • Charles J. Levine Award for the Best Conference Paper

The PNP Division is also home to the following awards which will be announced at the PNP Business Meeting:

  • Best Article Award for publications in the previous calendar year
  • Best Book Award, from published works of the last three years
  • Best Doctoral Dissertation Award
  • Keith G. Provan Award for significant contributions to Public Administration
  • Top Reviewer Awards
