AMD Mission Statement
The mission of AMD is to publish phenomenon-driven empirical research that theories of management and organizations neither adequately predict nor explain. Data on these poorly-understood phenomena can come from any source, including ethnographic observations, lab and field experiments, field surveys, meta-analyses, construct validation research, and replication studies. AMD welcomes exploratory research at the pre-theory stage of knowledge development, where it is premature to specify hypotheses, and which generates surprising findings likely to stimulate and guide further exploration and analysis. This research must be grounded in rigorous state-of-the-art methods, present strong and persuasive evidence, and offer interesting and important implications for management theory and practice.
AMD is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December.
Accordingly, AMD publishes management research guided by empirical abduction and induction, or in other words, studies which use data exploration in order to:
- Surface significant new or emerging phenomenon using any number of empirical approaches including rich description, quantitative construct validation, and/or empirical taxonomic analyses.
- Identify and explore surprising relationships using rigorous qualitative and/or quantitative methods in order to develop plausible explanations for those relationships and provide a grounded basis for innovative theorizing.
- Studies that leverage the data to offer plausible explanations for the mechanisms underlying these relations and/or the conditions governing them are likely to be published as full-length papers.
- Studies simply exposing stylized facts and providing evidence of their consistent and non-spurious nature without examining mediators or moderators are likely to be published as "Discoveries-in-Brief".
- Leverage original, secondary or "big" data and any number of alternative approaches (including lab and field/quasi-experiments, meta-analyses and replication studies) in order to offer empirically-driven insights into and/or a plausible resolution of critical anomalies and discrepant findings.
- AMD strives to reflect the voice of the authors, not that of the reviewers or editors.
- As a policy AMD editors strive to make a publication decision after one round of the double blind review process.
- AMD invites readers to interact with authors and our scientific community by writing commentaries about journal articles that advance scholarly knowledge on the topic.
- AMD aims to be a pioneer in advancing scholarship and social science through the multimedia affordances of online publication which transcend paper-based publications.
Criteria for Publication
AMD's mission is distinct from, but complementary with other Academy of Management publications. AMD focuses on reporting important and interesting findings or unusual empirical patterns that emerge from qualitative or quantitative research, which are not adequately explained by current theory. Whereas other AOM publications focus on the generation, testing, confirmation, review, and application of theories, AMD seeks discoveries that will prompt new lines of research or practice that may subsequently appear in other AOM journals.
The major criteria by which papers at AMD are judged are: (a) the importance of the discovery, (b) the technical strength of the research methods employed, and (c) the weight of the quantitative or qualitative evidence presented in supporting the premise and eliminating alternative explanations for the discovery. Papers will also be judged on writing style, structure, and length. Poor presentation is sufficient reason for the rejection of a manuscript. All articles published in AMD must be accessible to the Academy's wide-ranging readership. Manuscripts will be evaluated by the action editor in terms of their contribution-to-length ratio. They should be written as simply and concisely as possible without sacrificing meaningfulness or clarity of exposition. They should also be double-spaced, use one-inch margins and Times New Roman (or equivalent) twelve-pitch font.
Your paper has a higher probability of being accepted for publication in AMD to the extent that it:
- Is empirical, grounded on abductive reasoning and uses data to lay the groundwork for further theoretical development (i.e., be “pre-theoretical”): AMD welcomes papers that use an abductive, data-driven approach to highlight emergent or poorly understood phenomena, as well as to derive plausible explanations for them, thus in turn providing the basis for further theoretical development.
- Has interesting and important theoretical implications, providing critical guidance for further conceptual or theoretical development: In most AMD papers, theory offers a guiding framework, but one that, most importantly, is also affected by the findings. For example, a discovery may highlight new boundary conditions for some theory. A discovery may question accepted understandings of the mechanisms underlying a relationship, or completely overturn basic assumptions underlying a particular theory. A discovery may demonstrate some relationship that is simply inconsistent with a variety of relevant theories and provide a plausible explanation as to when and why this is the case. In sum, the aim of most AMD papers is to use empirical findings to provide plausible, data-driven descriptions of and explanations for phenomena, relations, and anomalies for which extant theory falls short. Accordingly, AMD may best be described as “pre-theoretical.” In contrast to other empirical journals which require extensive a-priori theorizing in the manuscript’s front end, in AMD papers most of the theory-relevant material is presented post-hoc and found in the paper’s discussion. In this way, the discussion provides a framework to guide further theory generation and a basis upon which to ground propositions and even testable hypotheses.
- Meets the highest standards for methodological rigor: AMD uses the same standards for assessing methodological rigor as do the highest-rated journals in our field such as Academy of Management Journal.
AMD adopts the same rigorous double-blind review process as used by other AOM journals. However, AMD expands the uses of theory in service of verification and testing to include theory in service of describing and understanding the phenomena. Reviewers will still apply stringent requirements in terms of the quality of ideas and data, acknowledgement of relevant literature, technical adequacy, and readability. But the requirement for a "contribution to theory" is replaced with this test: Is the discovery plausible and does it have a high likelihood of stimulating future research that will substantially alter managerial theory or practice?
A primary objective of AMD is the timely dissemination of empirically driven insights that have significant implications for theory and policy. Therefore, authors should provide evidence of robust findings and explain how those findings and the insights drawn from them can be used to influence down-the-road theorizing to shape and improve the understanding of management and the functioning of organizations. Submissions that do not present strong evidence and new insights about important phenomena relevant to management and/or organizations will not be reviewed. Submissions that do not clearly explain the relevance of their work for improving our understanding of organizations and/or the practice of management will not be reviewed. A response to, or commentary on, a previously published article will only be considered only if it presents additional empirical evidence and makes an independent contribution that further illuminates the focal phenomenon. Such submissions will be peer reviewed.
AMD is an electronic journal designed to leverage online technologies to achieve rapid and broad dissemination of important research, engage authors and readers in meaningful conversations, and promote meaningful applications. Authors of accepted articles will be invited to post short videos that illustrate their discoveries and its significance. Authors also will be encouraged to participate in online conversations about their work using the journal's online social media tools.
Authors should prepare their manuscripts in accordance with AMD's Style Guide, which appears on the AMD web page. In the Abstract (of no more than 200 words) authors should briefly describe the discovery presented in their paper and its potential implications for advancing management knowledge and practice. Manuscripts that do not follow this style guide will be returned to their authors without review.

When authors submit their manuscripts to AMD for publication consideration, they agree to abide by the journal's publication requirements. Violation of any of the following requirements listed below will be treated as a violation of the Academy of Management's Code of Ethical Conduct and will result in appropriate penalties.
Authors must state affirmatively that a manuscript submitted for review and possible publication in Academy of Management Discoveries:
- Is prepared and formatted according to the journal's Style Guide for Authors.
- Has NOT been submitted previously to AMD for review.
- Is NOT under review for publication elsewhere.
- Will NOT be submitted to another publication entity until AMD makes a final publication decision.
- Does NOT use data that are reported in any other manuscript, published or not, except as explained in the cover letter to the Editor.
Submission of manuscripts previously published in the Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings or previously presented at a conference or currently under consideration for presentation at a conference is acceptable. Submission of a manuscript to AMD also carries an implicit quid pro quo: willingness to review for AMD. The cornerstone of the editorial process at AMD is the willingness of colleagues to provide each other feedback through peer review. Authors who submit manuscripts to AMD for review are expected to reciprocate by reviewing for AMD if called on to do so.
AMD uses multimedia to engage, communicate, and illustrate experiences that text cannot accomplish. As an online publication AMD goes beyond what traditional print journals can do. We are interested in evidence for your research claims, as well as experiences that provide new or better ways of knowing.
Examples of multimedia enhancements can include:

Developing media enhancements is not about making pretty pictures.

AMD strives for quick publication and dissemination of important research results. The journal's review process is designed to efficiently evaluate whether articles submitted for review are worthy of publication.
Upon receiving a manuscript, the editor will complete a preliminary screening to assess the degree to which it fits the criteria described above. A submission that fails to satisfy these criteria or one that the editor considers to have little chance of becoming publishable after one round of revision will be returned to the authors without further review. Manuscripts that the editor considers suitable for peer-review will be assigned to an action editor and then go through a double-blind review process. The action editor will make a publication decision based on his or her own evaluation taking into consideration the comments and recommendations of the reviewers.
Communicating a discovery often requires the unique voice of the author to appreciate its nature and context. Therefore, AMD will strive to use review processes that leaves the authors' voice intact rather than over-imposing the voices of the reviewers or editors. To accomplish this, papers will be assessed from the author's framework and perspective rather than those of the reviewers or editors. Moreover, we will strive to make final publication decisions after no more than one revision.
